PROVIDENCE, RI – Earlier today, the Rhode Island Department of Education released the results of the 2025 state assessments including the Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS), showing Providence public school students have rebounded above pre-pandemic levels in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math. Results show a modest climb for students in the capital city with a 2.4% increase in English Language Arts (ELA) and a 1.7% increase in math.

The overall results for the Providence Public School District (PPSD) show it is continuing with positive gains in both ELA and Math. The percentage of Providence students meeting or exceeding expectations in RICAS math outpaced the statewide growth of 1.3 percentage points in the same measure and fell just shy of the state's 2.9% ELA increase. In addition, the District has become a leader in the state in the reduction of chronic absenteeism rates. PPSD’s chronic absenteeism rate saw a 6.9 percentage-point decrease between the 2023-24 and the 2024-25 school years, one of the steepest declines in the state.

That was his introduction to the game at Hope High School. It wasn’t a local Pop Warner team, the latest version of Madden or being an NFL fan. And it started after one particular pickup basketball game when he was a freshman.

Blue Wave coach Peter Quaweay spotted Jean Louis gliding up and down the court, and the natural recruiter in him honed by previous stints at four college programs kicked into gear. Jean Louis was already long and naturally athletic, and Quaweay was picturing those physical gifts at work in a different setting. Whether it was tight end, offensive tackle or defensive end, Quaweay was immediately convinced — Jean Louis could be better served in the long term by trying football.

These leaders join PPSD at a pivotal moment as the district concludes five years of progress under Rhode Island’s Turnaround Action Plan (TAP) — the state-led effort to improve academics, operations, and family engagement across Providence schools.

District leaders are trying to garner excitement for the new school year.

The district will highlight the process made under state control, event as the city continues to push to take the schools back.

Providence Public Schools, acting superintendent, Dr. Paula Dillon says attendance rates have been improving, but there's still more work to do to reduce chronic absenteeism.
